The explosively popular Japanese comic ``Dragon Ball'' comes to life via Hollywood as ``Dragonball: Evolution.'' Before its world premiere March 12 in South Korea, the movie's cast of fresh young actors, Asian superstar Chow Yun-fat and former K-pop star Joon Park (Park Joon-hyung) turned up the temperature a notch in Seoul with their promotional tour Tuesday.

The original 500-plus-episode cartoon is based on the epic fantasy "Chinese Odyssey.'' First published in 1984, it sold over 200 million copies worldwide and has been made into three TV animation series, 21 movies and 25 video games.

The new Stephen Chow production brings the story of a teenaged Goku (Justin Chatwin) who, upon the dying wishes of his adoptive grandfather (Randall Duk Kim), seeks out the great masters Roshi (Chow Yun-fat) and
Bulma (Emmy Rossum). With his friends Yamcha (Joon Park) and Chi Chi
(Jamie Chung), he must gather all seven magical orbs or Dragon Balls
before the evil Lord Piccolo (James Marsters) uses them to conquer the
world.

Extensive clips of the movie were revealed exclusively for the Korean
press. ``I also love the comic books, but the manga is very (long).
There's no way to put all that in the movie,'' said director James Wong
(``Final Destination''). ``The goal also is to be able to introduce
`Dragonball' not only to fans but those who don't know it,'' he said,
adding that he wanted to craft a story that is relatable to a young
audience. ``Hopefully we'll have a chance to tell the rest of it in
subsequent movies.'' The creation of sequels will depend on the success
of the upcoming film, he said.

Chatwin (``Invisible''), who had been a fan of the TV cartoon, said he
was both excited and fearful of interpreting such an iconic character.
He had to undergo intense martial arts training ― ``vomiting because
they pushed us so hard.'' ``But it's a super fun movie and I'm
absolutely honored,'' he said.

Chow, the hero of Hong Kong noir films, plays a rather comical role in
the movie. Dressed in all black instead of his character's Hawaiian
shirt, he jokingly said his wife ― who is also his manager and mentor ―
``forced'' him to take the role because she needed ``money to buy a
very famous bag.'' He threw the crowded pressroom into more bouts of
laughter with humorous Korean phrases. Chow was last here 15 years ago
for shooting an action movie. He said he was surprised with the
modernization, ``but kimchi is still the same'' as it is with the
passionate people.

Park said it was a great honor to work with Chow in his second
Hollywood movie after ``Speed Racer.'' ``Mr. Chow is such a huge star
but on the set he is so humble and professional, and gave me a lot of
guidance,'' he said. About working in the United States, the former
G.O.D. rapper said he felt proud to see that the Korean film industry
is as sophisticated as Hollywood.

A group of young women waited outside the venue, screaming each time
Park spoke. Chung, an up and coming Korean American actress (``Chuck
and Larry'') said she was surprised to witness Park's popularity when
his fans greeted him at the airport Monday. ``He's my `oppa' (big
brother); he took care of me,'' she said about working with Park. ``I'm
so proud to be here,'' she said.

Screen beauty Rossum, who recently shot an advertisement here, said she
was happy to return. ``Everyone here has a good sense of humor and I
can see why everyone likes `Dragon Ball.''' Looking striking in a red
dress, she said she tried to bring Bulma to life as a ``feisty,
determined, intelligent, and yes, hopefully a little sexy, woman.''

Marsters pointed out that the movie is based on ``Dragon Ball'' rather
than ``Dragon Ball Z'' and that his character Lord Piccolo is a
powerful, muscular villain rather than a decrepit old man. Another
difference, he said, is that the film does not feature Lord Piccolo's
superpower ability of dismembering himself.

World premiere in South Korea on March 12. For all ages. Distributed by 20th Century Fox Korea

'Boys over Flowers' Actress Jang Found Dead in Apparent Suicide

By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter

Rising actress Jang Ja-yeon, who was currently starring in the KBS 2TV
hit drama ``Boys over Flowers,'' was found dead in an apparent suicide
Saturday at her home in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province.

Police said that the 26-year-old actress apparently hanged herself from
a stairway railing and was discovered by her sister around 7:30 p.m.

Jang was known to have had trouble with her current management agency
renewing her contract. The actress had complained about the
overwhelming stress to her sister during a phone call at 3:30 p.m. that
day, saying she ``wants to die.''

According to police investigations, Jang also suffered from depression
and had undergone medical treatment during the past year. About 10
years ago, Jang lost both of her parents in a car accident when she was
in high school and had lived with her sister since.

A will has yet to be found, but after her family's statements about the
actress' ongoing struggle with depression, police are searching for
further evidence of suicide and returned Jang's body to the bereaved
family without performing an autopsy.

Various stars, including the cast of Boys Over Flowers, are visiting
the late actress' mortuary at Seoul National University Bundang
Hospital to offer their condolences.

After her public debut in 2006 in a TV commercial, Jang rose to stardom
playing Sunny, one of the three mean girls in Boys over Flowers. She
was also awaiting her big screen debut in Penthouse Elephant.

I think it will be interesting to see Jeon Ji-hyun in a leading role, her first major action role. This film is certainly international with a Korean leading role with Chinese producers from the Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, all in a Japanese manga story with US-wide release by Universal Pictures.

Jang Ja Yun’s Manager Speaks Out

Image

Recently deceased Boys Over Flowers actress Jang Ja Yun past and possible reasons for her suicide are beginning to surface.

First it was reported that she died of depression and there were even reports saying that her manager stated she was murdered, well, that might be true... to some extent.

It has now been exposed that the up and coming actress was beaten and
forced to sleep with the Production Director (PD). Her manager is now
revealing the gruesome first hand accounts of the suffering and assaults against her, despite her family not wanting this information to be leaked. Jang Ja Yun hand wrote documents listing her tragedies. Before her death, she asked her manager to expose the person responsible for her attacks. She told him she didn't want her family to think she died of just depression but from something far worse.

The manager has yet to reveal more specifics regarding the documents but he did state the contents to be very shocking and disturbing. He only said so far that there were incidents at room saloons and bars, and being forced to sleep with the Dirty Ass PD. Other abuse include being physically beaten with water bottles and receiving threatening text messages. All this abuse took place in the past year and even just a week before she committed suicide, she went to the head of her company to ask for help from the harassment. But she was beaten and told to just endure it.

She confessed in her letters that she was forced to do the dirty deeds,
because she had no money and was emotionally weak. Jang Ja Yun's manager made a public statement that although exposing her truth to the police and media is going against her family's wishes, he wants to see the person pay / punished for her death.

The manager is cooperating with police to bring the PD in question to justice. Currently, the PD is in Japan (wonder what he's up to?)....how convenient.

It's been reported that the manager has tried to commit suicide also after revealing this statement and is currently hospitalized. He tried to commit suicide to avoid any backlash from exposing the truth about
Jang Ja Yun.

Exclusive Interview with BAI LING

Bai Ling will play Ria in the upcoming action film, Crank 2: High Voltage starring Jason Statham and Amy Smart, opening Friday, April 17th. For her first interview with Soompi.com, she discussed the movie and her experience as a Chinese actress in America, in addition to giving advice for the young people on Soompi who dream of success in entertainment.

Most of us on Soompi recognize Bai Ling for her red carpet fashion and her appearances on popular TV series like LOST and Entourage. But did you know that she has acted in over 60 films in China and the United States, or that she has been chosen as one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People? There is much about this versatile and creative actress that has yet to be revealed on Soompi, so I sat down with Bai Ling to find out what brought her to America to follow her dream.

Bai Ling was born in Chengdu in China, and started acting at the age of 14. When she came to the United States, she had no money and no English ability—just the dream of becoming an actress.

“It’s like a mute who wants to be a singer,” according to Bai Ling, who was made fun of for her wild aspirations. While she was staying in New York, she remembers sitting at a diner with some new acquaintances. When she told them she wanted to become an actress, they laughed and said “You see these waiters and waitresses working here? They’re ALL actors.”

It didn’t take very long for Bai Ling to figure out that making it as an actress in the U.S. was going to be the toughest challenge of her life. However, she never thought of herself as experiencing discrimination or having a more difficult time because she was Chinese.

“I think of myself as an actress, with a gift from God that I must share with the world. I just happen to LOOK Asian,” she says. In fact, many of the roles Bai Ling has played in American film were not originally written for Asian women, but she made the part work for herself and showed what could be done with talent and determination.

Her most recent film is the action-packed Crank 2: High Voltage starring Jason Statham and Amy Smart, to open in theatres Friday April17th. “I live on the edge of life, I do my own stunts. You will love the movie because it’s like a roller coaster, totally fast and crazy,” says Bai Ling, who thoroughly enjoyed joining the cast as Ria, the outgoing and hilarious Chinese call girl who resolves to help Jason Statham’s character on his mission after he saves her from a gang of thugs.

“My character is bold, crazy, and very funny. What she says may not make any sense to us, but it does to her... and that’s why I love playing that role. She’s so sincere.” Bai Ling says that she is usually cast in more seductive and mysterious roles, but that she had the time of her life playing someone so comical and wacky in Crank 2.

After acting for more than two decades in the United States, Bai Ling has gathered a diverse collection of experiences and life lessons that she would like to pass on to the young people of Soompi, especially the performers who want to make it in Hollywood or Asia as stars.

“For the fans out there on Soompi, you have to be innocent — to believe in your dreams like children because they have no fear of what others will think.” She says that only when you have the perfect combination of innocence and passion can you feel the “magic” of success.

For the young women especially, Bai Ling suggests shaving your head at least once in your life. “Anyone can take off their clothes, but shave your head — that’s when we can talk about what it really means to be naked.” Only when you experience true vulnerability can you have the motivation to achieve your most extreme goals.

As a truly confident, smart, and sexy Hollywood star, Bai Ling is a great example of what we can accomplish if we follow our dreams.

Soompi.com will be giving away tickets to Bai Ling’s new movie, Crank 2: High Voltage so stay tuned for more details.
